Mum visited us for a few days, we completed the last ClueQuest escape room, attended the Tower of London Ceremony of the Keys, and spent a week in the picturesque Azores, which is what I'll focus on here.

In October I walked the Easternmost sections of the South Downs, carved a pumpkin, and started a Youtube channel.

In September I made my own sourdough starter, attended PyCon UK, visited a fire garden, walked various places, and made bourbon biscuits.

In July I swam in Hampstead Ponds and visited Chislehurst Caves again, and made a dinner using an ingredient starting with each letter of the alphabet. I also visited a couple of photography exhibitions and toured a vineyard in Devon.

In June I saw the Lion King musical in London with Emily and her mum, created my own pottery pattern and painted it, and watched a thunderstorm over the City from Parliament Hill.

Bluebells were out in Elmstead Woods when I got back from Japan, and I did a few other things too.

In the last ten days in Japan I ended up on five different islands: Honshu, Shikoku, Miyajima, Kyushu, and Yakushima. While Yakushima won the natural beauty contest hands down, Shikoku and Miyajima were also beautiful. Unfortunately all we saw of Kyushu was the port of Kagoshima, due to the earthquakes a week earlier, though we did have a run-in with some wildlife there...

In Kyoto we saw bamboo, a golden pavilion and drank green tea; in Nara we fed many deer and climbed through the Buddha's nostril; and on Mount Koya we stayed with monks and ate monk food.

We spent the next few days doing quite a lot of snow-related stuff, while in and around the Japanese Alps. A particular highlight of the holiday was seeing the snow monkeys at the hot springs. We also did the Tateyama Kurobe route through the mountains.

This is the first of a few posts about my recent trip to Japan with Emily!

We arrived in Japan towards the end of an uncommonly early cherry blossom season, but fortunately we had hedged our bets around the country on where the best would be, so places we thought we'd be early for were in full bloom, while places we thought might be spot on were already dropping their flowers (raining cherry blossom is great). In the first few days we saw temples and a castle, hiked beautiful routes up hillsides, and of course got to eat some excellent sushi.

I got back from Japan on Sunday night and I shall be sorting out my photos from that shortly. In the meantime, I need to catch up with my March entry, which is quite a short one.

February was a month of birthdays, with Emily's first, for which we had friends over, played board games and had Japanese takeaway; Emily's Mum's next, for which I helped Emily sort out a surprise party; and then Jodi's, where we ate creme egg toasties, played in a ball pit, and ate experimental vegan pizzas.

In December we enjoyed the Southbank Christmas Market, where we found amazing Macaroni Cheese and chai tea, and saw several exhibitions, before I went to my parent's place for Christmas.

After a fairly quiet October, we ended up having a very busy November. In addition to everything else, my parents also came to stay with us for the first time, as Mum had some outings with her friends planned. We cooked them spinach and mushroom calzone.

Emily returned to the UK in October. I stayed in a Travelodge near Heathrow in order to meet her as her flight came in at 6:30am. In the hotel I watched Michael Portillo going to Istanbul by train.

In September, fuzzie and Bertram visited for a long weekend. We took a walk along Southbank in London and met up with Other Nick, and Alex, and actually found somewhere quiet to buy hot drinks! We also went to Café in the Crypt at St Martin's in the fields.

It was also the night of the "blood moon" lunar eclipse. Surprisingly it was actually a cloudless night, and after being woken up by my alarm near to full eclipse, I sat on the bedroom windowsill and watched it for an hour before curling up back in my warm bed. The photo for this post is the best I could get with my camera.

Finally, my parents moved house, for the first time since they got together. They now live in Devon which is very beautiful. I visited them on the weekend they moved to help them unpack, so hopefully that helped them feel more at home.
